What you need to know before installing a skylight.

There are a few important things you should know before installing a skylight.

The shape of a skylight controls how light travels- If you want light to be evenly spread, make sure when installing a skylight that flares out instead of facing straight down. Skylights that have straight edges are the best option when you want focused light in a room.

Avoid Skylight glare- There are a few things that you can do to avoid skylight glare. Replace the glazing with a higher-performance glass or clear acrylic dome, apply sunscreen to the exterior of the skylight, or you can even apply tinted film to the glass.

Skylights create the illusion of space- It is a known fact that even a smaller space will appear larger if there is a skylight installed. This is simply because it allows the natural light inside. The window above also makes the space seem more open and airier.

Choose materials designed to regulate temperatures- Energy-efficient rated skylights are the best option for this.

Consider your skylight options- There are several different types of skylights, such as ventilating, fixed, and tubular. They also come in a wide range of shapes which includes flat, arched, domed & pyramid.

Consider how climate can affect your skylight- Due to the fact that skylights are located on the roof, they can obviously result in unwanted additional heat in the summer and loss of heat in the winter from inside the home. Make sure that you select an energy-efficient skylight because the manufacturers do use various glazing techniques, which include heat-absorbing tints, insulating glazing, low-emissivity coatings (known as low-e), and also translucent insulation material between several glazing layers.
